Natural corals are sourced off the coasts of Hawaii which is exported to Italy (for distribution in Europe) by "U.S.A" and then to Asia through sea ports of "Hong Kong", "Singapore" and "Sri Lanka" and then re-exported to rest of the countries. In trade people unknowing call "Hawaiian corals" as "Italian corals". Natural coral with combination of red and orange color (red color being primary while orange color being secondary) has the best value. Golden coral is precious due to its rarity; pink and red coral is used extensively as bead in jewelry.

Sea bamboo corals (Gorgonian Coral) from Taiwan are less-expensive, highly porous and gray to white color which are dyed in several colors, mostly in red, and sold as natural Hawaiian red coral. Absence of closely packed parallel line on the surface of sea bamboo coral is the key identifying feature to separate it from "natural Hawaiian red corals". Generally, the gap between two parallel lines on the surface of sea bamboo coral is much more than that found on natural red coral.

Corals are also being constructed in lab by many companies. In gemological term lab created corals are known as "reconstructed corals". Especially corals created by company named "Gilson" is famous in trade. This company also manufactures varieties of other gemstones in its lab which includes "Opal" and "Turquoise".
